Vega Baja Census Breaks Down Another Brick Wall

These Vega Baja census records have been an absolute goldmine for my genealogical research. I have already talked about how they helped to extend my Morán and Calderón lines and today I want to focus on my Meléndez line. One that has been full of mystery since I discovered the civil registry records of Puerto Rico.

What I Knew...

Meléndez was the surname passed down to my maternal great-grandfather. Technically, our family should have been Calderón; however, Agustín’s parents were not married and that’s how we ended up being Meléndez. In the record below, you can see that my second-great-grandfather was registered with the surnames Meléndez Morán.

When I found Agustín on the census and it listed him as a Calderón Meléndez I was actually super surprised because I had no idea about this… and neither did my maternal grandmother! Below you can see Agustín and Ana in one household and then my second-great-grandfather living next door to his parents and siblings.

Going back two more generations from José Mélendez Morán yielded the name Crescencia Melendez as my oldest ancestor on this line with the help of vital records. Finding information on Crescencia’s parents has been difficult seeing as how she was born before the creation of the civil registry in 1885. There are no church records online for Vega Baja, and I have not found a death record either. Little did I know I had been ignoring some very important clues about her identity without realizing it! I wouldn’t come to realize this until I located the 1858 census.

One clue I did have which I had not ignored was that Crescencia’s father was a man named Damián Meléndez based on Luisa Calderón Meléndez’s death record. The information was provided by Luisa’s husband Maximiliano Morán. Luisa was Agustín’s sister, it is important to note that she appeared with the surname Calderón.

1858 Census

At first, I searched high and low in the 1858 census for Crescencia Meléndez with no luck. I had been able to find my Morán and Calderón ancestors, so why could I not find my Meléndez ones? According to some later vital records, one possibility was that she was from Morovis and therefore living there at this time; though by 1858 some of her earliest children should have been born. So where was she? Similarly, my other branches from this area were firmly rooted in the barrios of Pugnado Afuera and Algarrobo since at least the early 1800s. Surely so was my Meléndez branch? So I decided to switch my approach. Could I locate any Damián Meléndez on the census or similarly all/any individuals with the surname Meléndez — no matter if it was their paternal or maternal surname. I started in the barrios (neighborhoods) I knew well, Pugnado Afuera and Algarrobo. And this was what caused the bricks to tumble!

Damián Rivera Meléndez
Born about 1795

Of course, what I was looking for was almost right before my very eyes. I was able to find a family that fit exactly what I was looking for — a man named Damián and the surname Meléndez, though listed as the maternal name. His name was Damián Rivera Meléndez and he was married to Vicenta Rodríguez Ríos. What was interesting about Damián was that despite having Rivera as his surname all of the next individuals were listed as Meléndez Rodríguez. This suggested that his maternal name was passed down instead of his paternal one. Or was Meléndez his paternal surname? Right now it’s not possible to know without identifying the names of his parents.

Also interesting was to find a young child with the surnames Calderón Meléndez living in the home as well. Could this be a sibling to my ancestor, Agustín Calderón Meléndez. Lastly, where was Crescencia in all of this? She wasn’t living with Juan Calderón so it’s not clear as to where she was residing. I would have to check all the other barrios to rule out where she was living in Vega Baja at this time. It’s also possible that she was listed under another name such as María. Having the surnames Meléndez Rodriguez will be important in finding her.

What’s funny about this whole thing is that technically I already had most of this information. Except I just did not understand or take it for what it was. I must have interrupted it as errors in the documents and didn’t search further. Granted, with the lack of church records for Vega Baja, it is quite difficult to search further into the Meléndez branch. Here’s what I was able to realize with this new discovery.

The Meléndez Rodríguez

Amongst those listed after Damián and Vicenta were those we can assume are their children Manuel, Agustina, and Mercedes Meléndez Rodríguez. Researching them may help us to learn more about their lives and that of Damián and Vicenta. Research was able to yield the following.

  • Manuel Meléndez Rodríguez, died on 18 January 1901 in Pugnado Afuera, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. He was married to Nicolasa Rivera and the father of Santiago, Carmen, Martina, and Anicasia. His parents were listed as Damián Meléndez and Vicenta Ruiz.
  • Mercedes Meléndez Rodríguez, died on 3 February 1895 in Pugnado Afuera, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. She was the widow of Eugenio Colón and mother of Catalina, Liberada, and Alejo. Her parents were listed as Damián Meléndez Ruiz and Vicenta Rodríguez Ríos on her death record.
  • Agustina Meléndez Rodríguez, died on 26 August 1895 in Algorrobo, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. She was single at the time of her death. Her parents were listed as Damián Meléndez and Vicenta Rodríguez.

An Obvious Clue...

Revisiting my second-great-grandaunt’s birth record made me realize that I had ignored a clue for too long because it was an error.

In Luisa’s birth registered in 1888, her father was listed as Agustín Meléndez Rodríguez, the son of Damián Meléndez and Vicenta Rodríguez! The record is very difficult to read and it is probably why I ignored it, thinking it was just a mistake. And though it is, these were Agustín’s grandparents! Similarly, her sister Luisa’s birth record, listed her mother as Crescencia Meléndez Rodríguez! Another clue to her surnames matching the other children of Damián and Vicenta in 1858. Similarly, another mistake in Luisa’s birth record was that they mentioned Vicenta Rodríguez (then corrected to Flora Morán).

All of these mistakes were clues I had no idea would lead me to my ancestors! Note to self- IGNORE NOTHING! I think it’s important to mention that without the 1858 census, these would have been speculative. Technically they still are since I don’t have a record directly tying Crescencia to Damián Meléndez and Vicenta Rodríguez yet; however, the evidence and other records found provide a strong connection. I have had this mystery on my hands for at least 13 years and finally a record hidden away on FamilySearch was able to provide me more information on my ancestors.

Where to next...?

My next goal is to try and identify my Meléndez ancestors in the 1841 census; however, I haven’t been able to find Damián on it. Potentially maybe he was the one from Morovis? I was able to find a death record for a Damián Meléndez Ruiz who died on 12 March 1886 in Algarrobo, Puerto Rico. However, no age was listed and he appeared as single. The informant was a neighbor who possibly did not know that Damián had been married. Though it did liste his parents as Pedro Meléndez Ruiz and Ángela Ruiz Rivera, both deceased.

Further research may help me to confirm that this was my ancestor’s death record. Until then, I am excited to have pushed my lines back just a bit more!
